San Jorge's Magic Birding/Photography Tour was a Bucket List trip for us and truly exceeded our expectations.
We stayed at the San Jorge Quito Lodge in the foothills above Quito for 5 nights of our 19 day Photography/Birding tour. It was a privilege to have Dr. George Cruz, owner and expert birder and photographer, as our guide. The grounds were beautiful and the staff was attentive and accommodating. Even the occasional power outage added to the ambiance as we ate our delicious and authentic Ecuadorian meals by candle light. Our days were full as we visited various birding sites in the Eastern Andes and George taught us about the culture and history of Ecuador and introduced us to local markets.
Trip of a lifetime.
What a wonderful experience! If Jorge and his staff could have done any more to make my experience exceptional I don't know how. From the lodge called Guacamayos Lodge which is a new Lodge and quite exceptional in location and beauty, where Jorge and his wife looked after me with grace and style and with my only disappointment being that I did not actually see a Cock of the Rock despite hearing them from the lodge on many occasions, to the other four amazing Lodges which all had something very special to experience. How about the terrific Orchids everywhere and the butterflies!!! The service and food were more than top drawer and of course the rooms were beautiful too. Jorge arranged a tour of the old city of Quito at the last minute for me as well and it was a revelation to see those amazing churches. Thank you for all your knowledgable guiding both in birds and botanical, it really made the trip. Pauline D
Put these eco lodges on your list!
Jorge's lodges are full of a contagious, authentic, passionate love of both Ecuador and its natural places. The rooms are comfortable, the staff and cooks are warm and welcoming and work hard to meet every need. We stayed in a deluxe room in the Tandayapa Lodge and spent our days in the company of over thirty hummingbird species, the golden-headed quetzal, toucanets, and even the white-faced nunbird. The lodging and location was magnificent. Jorge guided our trip to mountain bike around Cotopaxi National Park, explored his lodge in Milpe, hiked an ancient trail of the Yumbo people. Our visit was enriched by Jorge's knowledge of history and his curiosity about the world. We did not like Otavalo- nothing original or handmade in the entire market- but the day dedicated to seeing it was somewhat salvaged because Jorge made sure it involved some culinary treats like bizcocho and fritada. We ate well, enjoyed active hikes in the cloud forest and observed this part of Ecuador with a knowledgable guide.
Unparalleled Wild Beauty!
My trip to the east slope of the Andes and beyond was without a doubt one of the highlights of my life, with top notch accommodations provided by the San Jorge family and staff who treated me like family from the moment of arrival with safe transfer pick-up at Quito international, where I was whisked away into the mountains above Quito to their stunningly beautiful 18th century monastery that has been transformed into the most spectacular and comfortable lodge with glorious gardens of beautiful plants and birds to photograph and just unwind after your long journey. Consider this location “base camp” for your continued trek to their other magnificent lodges and beauty beyond belief that is Ecuador. Do yourself a favor and make this journey to Ecuador with these wonderful people who will enthusiastically show you to all the natural beauty of this glorious country and will treat you royally with every step. Thank you, Dr. Cruz, Irena, Carlos and company who provide me the friendliest hospitality of the high! Cheers my friends and looking for to returning soon!
Fabulous birding tour in some unbelievably palatial lodges.
My wife and I made our 3rd visit to San Jorge lodges in Ecuador for the fabulous birding experience and excellent accommodation and hospitality. Dr. Jorge Cruz's 6 lodges offer different birdwatching experiences in different environments and different elevations from the eastern Andes slopes to the Amazon district. He offers a complete package from airport pick up and drop off in Quito and the accommodations, catering and hospitality are outstanding, actually way beyond most birding offerings and at a competitive cost. The Quito lodge reminds us of a historic Spanish pousada, the rooms are less luxurious but the hospitality and extensive landscaped grounds are wonderful offering great birding. The lodges at Tandayapa, Milpe, Guacamayos and Sumaco are outstanding for incredible palatial accommodation, amazing meals and birdwatching opportunities. Each lodge is set in huge natural areas with extensive trails and Jorge also provides 2 or 3 birdwatching outings each day though the birding at each lodge is wonderful, especially at the feeders. Our small group (max 8) were transported between lodges, birding as we went and stopping en route at several wonderful birding places with feeders. Booking and general administrative advice is through Cheryl in the U.S. who is always responsive and helpful. We did hit a particularly wet spell this time but nevertheless if Ecuador wasn't a 12 hour flight from the UK we'd be there more frequently!
Magic birding circuit Ecuador
This was a great birding trip. Jorge, our guide, was great! Our group had early and advanced birders, and it worked very well. We saw more than enough to satisfy everyone! The hospitality at the San Jorge Lodges Was outstanding. Pick up and drop off at the airport were right on time.
I will be back again soon!
